The Accident

On 4/16/2010 at approximately 10 to 10:15pm, my Lenny was involved in a serious boating accident. There were 6 occupants of the boat, all were injured. Both Lenny and his best friend Jakie sustained life threatening injuries and were airlifted to trauma centers, Jakie to Las Vegas, Lenny to Phoenix.

I received a call at 1:45am informing me of the accident. I then spent the next 2 hours trying to find him and find out what happened. After calling two hospitals I found Jakie, and then called his mom and she took it from there. I still couldn't find Lenny, so I called the Lake Havasu Police and they got back to me in about a half an hour telling me he was in Phoenix and that the social worker would be calling me soon. Next came the longest 20 minutes of my life. Waiting to hear....

Lenny sustained the following injuries - Completely fractured face from the upper jaw to above the eyes, broken neck, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, and severely broken legs. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I spent the next several minutes rallying friends and getting to YiYi (that is what Lenny calls his sister). We all headed to Phoenix and below I will update you on his condition, how we are holding up, and have a way to communicate with you to keep you updated and be able to answer your questions and be able to get the support we so desperately need from all the wonderful people that love him.

Week Four - Thursday

Well as the days pass here at rehab there is less and less to say. Not much different happens day to day.

We went over the XRays with the doctors today because Lenny is having such pain in his left knee. The doctors think that the Fibia bone may be moving causing him the pain as it takes time to heal of course. We are waiting for an appointment to see the Orthopedic Surgeon that did the surgery on Lenny's legs. Until then he is no longer allowed to put weight on his legs. Since he cannot put weight on his legs he did a lot of muscle strengthening today in PT.

Mishell went home today so now I have to try and find time to fit in a nap (unless hopefully he will start sleeping through the night). Today I got a 20 minutes nap in while he was in speech therapy (which he despises because he feels like they are asking him stupid questions).

Last night Lenny kept waking up in cold sweats, and I think it is from the medicine. Lenny thinks it is from all the rubber and plastic on the bed and pillows. So today I went to Target and bought him some cheap pillows and a blanket for the bed under the sheet so he won't feel the mattress. I cannot understand why he doesn't sleep through the night, he is on pain medicine, muscle relaxers, benadryl, a sleeping pill, plus a ton of other things. Here is to hoping tonight is the night....

Until tomorrow! Love, Nancy

  2. So glad to hear about the progress Lenny is making. Sometimes it will feel like the progress is slowing down too much or even feel like there is no progress. At those times look back at where he was and where he is now. Please Nancy take care of yourself too. You will be no good to Lenny if you are sick. Boy that sounded like a Mom didn't it. Well I am sure I have said those words to Mike and alot more :). We continue to lift your names to our Lord and Savior. You know He has plans for you. I can hardly wait to see what they are. Sending our love

  4. Nancy:
Everyday I look so forward to reading your blog and hearing of Lenny's progress. I want you to know that with a injury to the legs like Lenny's it is not unusual for patients to get put back to non weight bearing to allow more time for the bones to mend before trying walking again. All everyone has to do is see the picture of Lenny and we all know he is progressing. He is healing so much faster than I originally anticipated. So, before you know you will indeed be California bound. I love you and pray for you both daily.
