The Accident

On 4/16/2010 at approximately 10 to 10:15pm, my Lenny was involved in a serious boating accident. There were 6 occupants of the boat, all were injured. Both Lenny and his best friend Jakie sustained life threatening injuries and were airlifted to trauma centers, Jakie to Las Vegas, Lenny to Phoenix.

I received a call at 1:45am informing me of the accident. I then spent the next 2 hours trying to find him and find out what happened. After calling two hospitals I found Jakie, and then called his mom and she took it from there. I still couldn't find Lenny, so I called the Lake Havasu Police and they got back to me in about a half an hour telling me he was in Phoenix and that the social worker would be calling me soon. Next came the longest 20 minutes of my life. Waiting to hear....

Lenny sustained the following injuries - Completely fractured face from the upper jaw to above the eyes, broken neck, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, and severely broken legs. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I spent the next several minutes rallying friends and getting to YiYi (that is what Lenny calls his sister). We all headed to Phoenix and below I will update you on his condition, how we are holding up, and have a way to communicate with you to keep you updated and be able to answer your questions and be able to get the support we so desperately need from all the wonderful people that love him.

Week five - Friday

This morning they brought me all of Lenny's prescriptions to fill before we went home. 11 of them! I took them to Walgreen's dreading what would be covered and what wouldn't, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. $150 for two weeks supply. That is all they will give us from here until we see our primary doctor back in California. Let's hope it is still only $150 when they give me a months worth!

Lenny had double the PT today and did 2 hours because he missed yesterday when we were at the doctor. He stood up quite a few times which is great, but is not really wanting to take any steps yet. Once we get to our primary doctor in California she will refer us to therapy out there so he can continue to work at walking. Other then that it was a typical day here in the hospital.

I ordered all of his medical equipment today for home which was a little over $500. I think the medical field really makes a killing! Did I tell you all how much the first bill I got for Lenny was.....$460,000 from when he was in the ICU. Crazy!

We are so anxious to be home that we are a little stir crazy here now. We so just want to be at home!
5 days and counting!

Love, Nanc

I want you to know that Walgreens has a plan you can sign up for when you are unemployed its like their own insurance it costs $35.00 a year for reduced costs on meds. Just go in and tell them that you cannot aford all the copays and you want to sign up for their low income plan. They do not need anything to prove it. Also, if any of his meds are not covered by your insurance walmart has a $4.00 plan where you only pay $4.00 for each prescription. If there are any meds that he is going to be on for a long time you can write a letter to the mfg and tell them you cannot aford them and they have a coupon program. I can help you with any of this if you want. I help my patients everyday with this stuff. Let me know what other things he is going to need because I have a in with certain supply companies etc. within HCA.

I am counting the days with you until you return home. I will rest easy once you are both home safe and Lenny has seen doc in cali and started physical therapy there. I know Lenny is not wanting to walk because of the pain but follow drs orders and as soon as he is full weight bearing he has to really work at it and yes he will have some pain but the more he works at it the sooner it will all go away. I am so happy for you both finally on the road home. OH HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!
